The Tax Man Cometh: Using Tax Records to Dig Up Ancestors
Presentation
Saturday, June 27
1:00pm - 2:30pm
Join the Capital District Genealogical Society members for their monthly meeting, followed by a Zoom presentation by professional genealogist Carol Cooke Darrow.
The census taker showed up every ten years and often missed people. The tax man came every year and rarely missed anyone. This presentation shows how tax records can fill census gaps, map the land and property of our ancestors, and uncover unexpected details such as house type, land location, neighbors, and sometimes even occupation.
Carol Cooke Darrow is the co-author of The Genealogist's Guide to Researching Tax Records, published by Heritage Books in 2007, and "The Genealogical Value of Tax Records," in the Oct/Dec issue of NHS Magazine. She is the past president of the Colorado Genealogical Society.
