This four-week poetry writing series will cover reading, discussing and writing constrained forms, including the anagram, the sonnenizio, and the place-as-person poem.
As a class, we’ll read and discuss representative works including poems by AE Stallings (“Olives”), Kim Addonizio ("Sonnenzio on a Line From Drayton”), and Terrance Hayes (“Pittsburgh”). We'll also experiment with exercises that will help us write our own constrained poems, ones that we’ll workshop in class.
Because constrained poetry asks us to be resourceful within parameters, it invites us to break through some of our own barriers as poets, often helping us to create unexpectedly funnier or fuller poems than we might otherwise!"
This event is funded in part by Poets & Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
